Fishing for Compliments

Have you ever heard the phrase,"so ugly, it's cute?" Well, these first grade clay fish must be what originated the phrase. I think that they are awesome and the project uses different hand-building techniques and out-of-the-box finishing materials.

We started with a pinch pot base and shaped and modelled with art materials and clay tools. After a bisque firing, we used oil pastels to add color to the surface. Next, we used black tempera paint to cover the fish and wiped away the excess with a damp paper towel. The paint left in the recessed areas really made the details pop. I finished each off with a coat of glossy clear acrylic. Perfect for a slippery, wet fish.

Fourth graders finished up their printing unit with some time for reflection on their own work followed by a gallery walk critique of their classmates' prints. They did a great job with positive and constructive comments.
