I think that Henri Matisse (our inspiration) would be impressed with these first graders' use of color and pattern. I know I am :) The French artist Matisse was labeled a Fauve (wild beast) because of his expressive use of color and pattern.

We looked at several of Matisse's still life artworks and noticed if he used mostly primary or secondary colors. We studied how to mix to make the secondary colors and how white is used to make colors lighter. The background was painted first using tempera cakes while the subject was painted using liquid tempera. Oil pastels (always a crowd pleaser) were used to add details and finishing touches.
