Face Jugs 2016

Each year fifth graders create face jugs based on the ones attributed to African slaves and later Southern potters such as the Meaders family in North Georgia. We usually create forms that are more like mugs but the students are excited about making functional pieces.

Students used hand-building techniques such as pinch and cool with modeled forms for details. Scoring and slipping was used to join details.

For an overview of simple hand-building techniques, check out the presentation here.
