A is for Apple

Fall is in the air. Football and festivals abound. In the art room we have completed self portraits (first grade) and family portraits (second grade) and are now learning about still lifes and the difference between shapes and forms. Our emphasis has been that shapes are flat but forms take up space and curve and move away from the light. The French artist Paul Cezanne (1839 - 1906) and his use of color and shadows has been our inspiration. These are first grade examples. First, we drew with a black crayon. (This class used black oil pastels but I switched to crayon for the others :) We painted the fruits and shadows with tempera cakes and used water colors for the table cloths.

Thanks to Ashley at for this project. I tweaked for our use.
