Chalk it Up to Experience

With Pop Artist Wayne Thiebaud as inspiration, third graders worked with chalk pastels to create treat-themed artworks. Challenged by his slightly above perspective, we drew cakes, candies, cones and even these french fries to create a more rounded form. After base colors were applied to the shapes, highlights and shadows were created by blending lighter and darker colors. We experimented with how to create light and darker colors without using white or black. Creating different values helped to show contours and forms. Cast shadows were added and a silver oil pastel highlighted the original drawing.

This project is not for the faint of heart or light-colored clothing. There is a great amount of chalk dust on tables and unwanted smudges around the "treats." We are lucky to have two student sinks for clean up time.A slightly damp paper towel tidies up the background and a quick table clean up gets the art room ready for the next class.
