Joys of the Art Room

I LOVE the happy clouds.
Something about a box of oil pastels that causes a flutter in even the youngest of hearts.

Kindergarten is working with space and how we use some of our other elements of art (in particular line and shape) to fill a space. We also learned the terms landscape and cityscape and viewed some examples. We talked about the sights, sounds, and smells of the cities that we had seen. We all agreed that there was a lot of crowded space in the 
city.


We set out to fill our space with a cityscape and used oil pastels to add another element of art, color. This was, for most students, the first time they had used oil pastels and were amazed at how easily the pastels colored. "This is awesome!" "Where can I get these?" "The lighter the color, the better it shows up on the dark paper!" "Can we use these again?" These remarks were like music to my ears.

Peer Pressure :)

Sometimes all one needs is a little push and some inspiration to take a step outside one's comfort zone. I'll have to admit... we haven't worked with clay all year. It is a challenge on the best of days but excitement filled even on the worst of days. After spending the afternoon with the other elementary art teachers in our district, I felt inspired to break out the clay.
 
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. With a waning full moon and a week-long Thanksgiving break on the horizon, why not jump in head first?
 
In Fourth grade, we decided to make animal-inspired bells. We quickly reviewed the pinch pot hand-building and modeling methods along with scoring and slipping to join two clay forms.

Pumpkins, Patterns, and Perspective

W hat's November without some pumpkin art?














Second graders worked with color, learning to mix tints and shades. After the paint was dry, pattern was added for interest.




Third graders reviewed the characteristics of a landscape and created pumpkin patches using 1 point linear perspective.

Get Caught in a Caldecott


Tuesday, November 5th was our annual Family Literacy Night.
My station was a photo booth allowing the students to become David from David Shannon's No, David and join the Wild Rumpus with Max and a wild thing from Maurice Sendak's Where  the Wild Things Are.














Students also had the opportunity to become illustrators using Ed Emberley's thumb-print creatures and use their creativity to design a personalized bookmark.

The night was also a success for our community service project Helping Hearts and Homes. Through the sale of student made art, we raised $94.75. Wow!
