2nd and 3rd Grade Animal Collages

From the French word  colle meaning "glue," collage is one of my favorite art forms to use with elementary artists. We were inspired by the stories and illustrations of Eric Carle and Rebecca and Ed Emberley.
We included both painted and unpainted papers to capture the style of these artists.
Some of the works are still in progress with smaller details
to be added with paper and oil pastels.

Kindergarten Polar Bears

In Kindergarten, we work to learn the elements of art and talk about them as we use them in our own works. For this lesson we reviewed line and shape and introduced texture.  Students used short brush strokes to show the fur of the polar bears. We also discussed details as the small parts of the bear that go inside the bigger shapes.

Land Art

Inspired by the works of Andy Goldsworthy
and a beautiful day,
1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders enjoyed making art
from found natural objects.

First, we looked around the playground to see
what materials were available and put them in
our baskets. Working in our outdoor classroom,
we let our imaginations and creativity take over.

We learned that some art only lasts for a moment,
especially on a windy day.
